Notes

1. Last week, I found the activity on Sina microblog and then got an early bird ticket of OpenStack in China 2013.
2. Today(10/20/2013) I went to W3 Coffee around 10:30 am. When passed the SuZhou Jie street in Zhong Guan Cun, happened to see lots of people running on the road who were participating the Beijing Marathon.
3. IT markets in China
   • Enterprise: IBM, Redhat, EMC, Oracle, HP, VMWare
   • Consumer: Baidu, Tencent, Alibaba, 360Qihu ....
4. United Stack is a start-up company founded in Silicon Valley around 2013-2-16?, founder is Chen Hui
5. The guy(Chen Hui) wants to enter enterprise market within two years only using IT technologies from internet and open source community. He mentioned some advantages of internet tech: 1. advanced 2. Open and transparency. He also revealed all the work from
   UnitedStack would be open source.
6. Chen Hui first joined in OpenStack community in Sina, then after half of year he was invited to US. as a speaker in a Openstack tech conference. Before he left Silicon Valley, he decided to register a company there.
7. Cost: OpenStack are based on some opensource software: KVM, Cech, OpenSwitch. KVM's dev cost is about 0.2 billion $, OpenStack itself is about 27 million $

8. Present state in Clouding market:

   • proprietary: just left Vmware and Microsoft that use their own clouding software platform.
   • Open Source: OpenStack gained prominence. IBM, HP etc gave up their own clouding solution and moved to OpenStack during recently years.

9. DEMO: lasted more than one hour, seriously extending time. They didn't schedule lunch for audience until 1:00 pm later. Anyway, UnitedStack's UOS(an OpenStack distribution) indeed showed some highlights, such as:

   • Install from an U-disk, provide an one-click installer, following are several configuration steps in Web brower(like to install a WordPress).
   • Fantastic Web UI and good user experience.
   • Everything is available on the web platform: install, config, monitor, operate virtual machine.

Summary

1. Learned a lot about OpenStack and clouding tech. OpenStack is to simplify the process of building and configurating a clouding platform, it's totally built based on Open Source software that can help enterprise customers reduce cost significantly.
2. UnitedStack is a great start-up company for engineer and from engineer. Its founder Chen Hui is full of passion to Open Source and clouding tech.
3. It seems UnitedStack's engineers haven't involved in OpenSource communities deeply, they may not take over core tech in any communities. United Stack is more likely to be an integrated supplier for clouding infrastructure.
4. During this demo, Chen Hui and his team didn't show professionalism to us, though they truly looked so COOL.
5. All in all, UnitedStack's product "UOS" is really thrilling, but there is still a long way for UnitedStack to enter into the market of enterprise IT. And OpenStack as an open source platform has integrated some core clouding techniques, we can only embrace
   it rather than reinvent our wheels.
