ISSUE 48 The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten.

Does the most significant event and trends in history were made possible by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten instead of the famous few, as the statement suggests? Admittedly, the main power to push the significant event and trends is groups of common people, without whom, nothing will be done. However, I fundamentally disagree with the statement because it ignores the important role of the famous few in creating most events and trend in history. Therefore, my contentions toward this opinion are that it is necessary to admit the influence of groups of people in the significant events and trends, while, the power of the great individuals is also unbelievable.

没它不行 讲讲普通人在历史中的重要作用

First and foremost, there is no denying the fact that it is common people that write the main part of history. As a typical example, the pyramid with tremendous secret is made by thousands of ordinary Egyptians. As the only man-made building can be seen on the flight, the great wall is the wonderful masterpiece of numberless Chinese. So common people are the main authors of the history. The study of history should realize this point and lay emphasis on ordinary people.

有它还不够,名人在历史中的重要作用:A可以清楚地看出事件的来龙去脉 B他们也是普通人,也体现了社会思潮

Despite the merits of the speaker’s claim, however, I disagree with the statement that the study of history places too much emphasis on individuals and ignores the ordinary people. Actually, only great people can realize the real trends of history, let alone their own goods. They are common people in some sense. However, they mostly have great ability and thought that exceed ordinary people. Take Peter the Great as an example. His modernization of the army and the creation of the navy in Russia were of great importance as well as his Westernization of Russia during the Age of Enlightenment. His brilliant work had led the Russia to a great power in the word. Another plausible example is George Washington, who is the founder of the United States. These people had significant contribution that could never be ignored to world history. In America, the president has the right to kill a bill by one vote, which is one typical example of the great role of the famous few in creating the history. Many great people lead the key event in the history directly because only they have the ability to call up people and hold up people.

As for the study of history, the understand of the famous few may lead to the find of a lot of new discovery since these people have their own special characteristics and are the representation of the time. Honestly, choosing famous people as the research object will be convenient for the historian because only their material is easy to find. For example, Martin Luther King is the best people through who can the historian learn what the persistent pursuit of dream mean. Through the works of Socrates, we know the origin of philosophy and the life of these great thinkers in that time.

正确的观点应该是,研究历史时普通人和名人都要关注,各有各的作用

From analysis made above, I concede that the study of history should lay emphasis in common people, while it is wrong to ignore the great power of the famous few. Both common people and famous people play their unique role in the development of history. Neither one of them could create most significant events and trends in history only by their own, so the study of history should focus on both of them.
